Chapter 8

It’s a godless night. What could possibly go wrong?

WE HAD ABOUT A WEEK left until the start of the run. As usual, the time was filled with frenzy, panic, leaders running all over the place, and all the other lovely things that came with the onset of night. It was the same every time.

I mean, sure, it was business as usual in the Tower this time, so maybe I’m exaggerating just a little bit. But it was funny to see how the calm, even pace of life could turn upside down in what felt like a fraction of a second. Everybody was buried in their decks, some walking around, some immersed in consultation with each other, all of them muttering, muttering, and muttering some more.

Mostly, they were muttering about Mustache and the rest of the high command. I would have muttered a little bit too, actually, but I had already tried that. I got sick of it pretty quickly, to be honest. And anyway, life was a bit easier now that I had some money coming in, and I no longer had to count every single cartridge in every single drum.

We were also waiting for the qualifying trial that might be our ticket into the second wave. But the directorship had their main units, too, and they would need to divide up the tasks among those units first. Most fun of all, though, was the fact that they still didn’t actually have any tasks to distribute.

“This is normal,” said West as he finished chewing a piece of cake. “Second-wave tasks get assigned as the run is already in progress. Once the first-wave players have brought in some information. So we’ll just be waiting.”

“How do we prepare, then?” I asked.

“Well, some stuff will be known ahead of time. We’ll need to plan for as many potential scenarios as we can, and then prepare setups for them.”

““Ahead of time” means a day before the run. The merchant will be arriving right before nightfall.”

“Nobody said the second wave is easy or fun,” replied West.

Half the unit was sitting together in a little cafe on the sixth floor. Over had been behaving remarkably well in recent weeks, so we decided we could risk going out among the general public.

There were a lot of noobs around, as well as a lot of students who had recently moved into the Tower. The Sunrisers’ employees who weren’t players often ate in this cafe as well. I didn’t really care for any of the restaurants on the floors that were for players only. They were too over-the-top, stylistically speaking, and they were unjustifiably expensive and loud.

People there also tended to look askance at my cowboy-esque outfit. And it wasn’t just the looks, either — some people understood exactly why I was dressed that way. And they seemed to think it was just fine to stroll right up while I was eating and start asking me questions. What’s up with the outfit? What’s your archetype? How much synergy
